Abstract:

Objective: to investigate the association between the functional capacity and the clinical profile in adults over 80. Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional study, conducted conducted with 103 adults over 80 from two Basic Health Units in Teresina-PI To assess functional capacity were used the Katz Index for basic activities of daily living (BADL), the Lawton and Brody Scale for Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Data were analyzed using Chi-square test and Spearman's test to correlate epidemiological variables with functional capacity (p <0.05). Results: 56.3% of adults over 80 were independent in BADL; 97.1% were partial dependents in IADL, and 24.3% were dependent on functional mobility. Functional capacity was associated with arthropathies, diabetes, osteoporosis, use of assistive gait devices, hip or knee prosthesis placement, concomitant use of three or more medications, moderate alcohol consumption, and, most significantly, with fear of falling. Conclusion: The fear of falling was the most significant factor of functional decline, being important its evaluation in adults over 80.
