Use of medicinal and / or phytotherapy plants by elderly persons with chronic diseases not transmitted

Abstract: 

Objective: To analyze the use of Medicinal and / or Phytotherapeutic Plants by elderly people with CNCD. Methodology: Descriptive research, with a quantitative approach, developed in February 2019, in a Family Health Strategy (ESF) of a municipality in the Southwest Region of Bahia, with 20 elderly people, aged between 60 and 75 years, of both the sexes, diagnosed with CNCDs, enrolled in the FHS elderly group. Results: Of the 20 people interviewed, 65% were females up to 69 years of age, between elementary school and high school (50%), 40% had Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH), 20% had hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus (DM), 70% of the interviewees use medicinal plants, 95% do not know the difference between Medicinal and Phytotherapeutic Plants. Conclusion: The results of the present study demonstrated the non-use of phytotherapics by the interviewees due to the lower knowledge about them, however the medicinal plants are widely used considering that it is not harmful to health, being prepared by decoction and used by self-medication. It represents a common and significant practice, data of great importance for health professionals which can contribute to a popular education in health.
