Knowledge regarding common health problems of improper household disposal

Aim of the study: To assess the knowledge regarding common health problems of improper household waste disposal. Background. The waste is generated as consequences of household activities such as the cleaning, cooking, repairing empty containers, packaging, huge use of plastic carry bags. During the last decade of 19th century as well as during 5 initial years of 20th century millions of people died due to bubonic plague which had poor linkage of improper waste disposal. Improper household wastes disposal leads to environment effects (aesthetic, water pollution, air pollution) as well as in human life (cholera, malaria, fever, diarrhea etc). Design: Cross sectional descriptive design. Methods: Randomized Convenience sampling method was used. A total of 30 samples participated in the study. Questionnaire was used to assess the level of knowledge. Result: The results showed that the 53% had adequate knowledge and 23% had moderate knowledge and 23% had inadequate knowledge. Mean score was 28.4±1.9 among study group. Conclusion: This study indicates that common health problems are due to improper household disposal and inadequate knowledge regarding disposal of wastes. There are potential risks to environment and health from improper handling of wastes. Proper education of the public, the provision of trash bins and the collection of waste by private contractors could help prevent exposing the public in municipalities to diseases.
