The purpose of intensive care units (ICU) is to meet the needs of patients, whose condition requires frequent assistance and observation by health professionals. The oral cavity is the gateway for pathogenic microorganisms and preventing infections by these agents is essential for the patient's systemic health. Thus, the aim of this study was to verify, through an integrative literature review, the most frequent diseases associated with the oral cavity in ICU patients and to emphasize the importance of the dentist in these intensive care units. The PubMede LILACS databases were consulted, using the following descriptors: “Intensive Care Units”, “Dentists”, “Dental Care” and “Oral health”. The search was restricted to articles published between 2017 and 2022, in Portuguese and English. The guiding question in the work was: “What is the role of the dentist in Intensive Care Units?”. Therefore, it is understood why the presence of the dentist in this environment is important and necessary. Since it enables quality of life and is capable of adequate training for the nursing team.
