Abstract:

The objective of the present study is to analyze the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the menstrual cycle, from the evaluation of biological and psychosocial factors of women who contracted the disease compared to those who did not. A cross-sectional study was carried out with data collected through an online questionnaire that was self-completed by the participants. A total of 113 university students were included in the study, all of them of childbearing age and during the pandemic period. The incidence of menstrual changes during social isolation in the sampled population was 30.1% and the reported irregularities were diverse. Among those who had COVID-19 infection, a minority (17.85%) felt some significant change in their menstrual cycle after having the disease. In conclusion, the impact of SARS-COV-2 infection on the menstrual cycle has not been well understood, and sufficient evidence does not support a pathophysiological relationship between the disease and menstrual disorders.
