Despite efforts to contain obesity in Brazil, primary care has several obstacles that hinder the work of nutritionists and other professionals who work to combat this epidemic, including problems in the management of public services, fragmented service, low professional qualification, low integration of nutritionist with the health team, low quality of information present in medical records in the basic health unit, high demand from the population, socioeconomic and cultural factors of the users. The Brazilian health system, through primary care, should encourage public actions and policies aimed at food and nutrition involving the nutritionist as a protagonist in preventing and combating obesity through changes in the eating habits of the Brazilian population.
