This article deals with the actions of an educational practice in health aimed at pregnant women and their social support network, called ‘Pregnant Couple Meeting’, developed at Hospital Sofia Feldman, in Belo Horizonte/MG. The aim of this paper was to understand, from the perspective of the participants, the effectiveness of the ECG in relation to the preparation for childbirth and breastfeeding. This is a case study, whose sample consisted of 15 women and 15 companions. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and submitted to content analysis. The results show that the ECG contributed positively to the participants' experience of labor, birth and breastfeeding. The basic theoretical elements of ECG practices are in line with the guidelines for patient safety in obstetrics, as well as with other public policies that advocate good practices for the time of delivery, birth and breastfeeding. It was concluded that the educational practice is relevant for the prevention of diseases during pregnancy and for expanding the knowledge of pregnant women and their companions about the care of the baby after delivery, especially in relation to breastfeeding.
