The scopeof this work is to address the issue of self-managed learning and its challenges in the face of contemporary demands. In the footsteps of this process, we seek to understand the context that marks society and education in the 21st century. After that, we try to reflect on the meaning of a self-managed education and the importance of granting autonomy and freedom to the student. The process of teaching and learning must place you as a subject. In the meantime, the example of a specific online course that has applied this modality and its advantages and disadvantages is presented, pointing out its characteristics. In addition, taking into account the instructional design, reflections are established on the contributions of all this to the effectiveness of the student's learning. Finally, it brings a history and feedback from a personal experience. This is done in the light of a bibliographical, critical, systemic and integrative review of the relevant literature, placing different authors and perspectives in dialogue, with a qualitative approach, explanatory research and inductive method.
