Study about the Central Market of São Luís and its relations with the identity, space and Ludovicense memory. It aims to discuss the role of the Central Market as a place of historical and cultural value and its relations with the identity, space and memory of the capital of Maranhão. It is an exploratory and descriptive study, which made use of bibliographical and documentary research as an instrument of theoretical foundation. It discusses the concepts and theoretical connections between memory and identity, from authors such as Candau (2016), Halbwachs (2006), Nora (1993), Woodward (2014). It characterizes the Central Market of São Luís, contextualizing its history and its spatial organization. It points out that public markets are historical legacies that bring with them a spatial memory from another time, which takes us back to another time. It highlights that the Central Market of São Luís is a meeting point for Ludovicenses citizens who have a feeling of belonging with their space. It reinforces that Maranhão's “Mercado Novo” represents the connection between space, memory and the origin of its history, whose symbolic elements are key pieces in the reconstruction of the memory incorporated and transmitted from generation to generation, constantly reinterpreted and re-signified.
