Social representations of elderly about the trip for long permanence institutions

Objective: To analyze the social representations of elderly about the trip for long permanence Institutions. Methods: A descriptive and exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, carried out in three Long permanence Institutions in Bahia, with 31 elderly, aged 60 and over, of both sexes. Research instruments comprised the Mini-Mental State Examination, a sociodemographic questionnaire, a semi-structured interview. In order to perform the analysis and the results interpretation, we used the Bardin. Results: The causes that contributed to the elderly's going to the ILP are related to weakness, need for care and family disinterest. The elderly have negative social representations regarding the reasons that led them to an ILP. Conclusion: It is essential to be aware of the elderly, especially when they are signaling some difficulty, and in this way, develop some strategy to meet the identified needs.
